What weekends are for

Howard and Alina Some people relax at the weekend, and this is what Paul and I most often try to do. Followed by as little as possible. Sometimes, however, it’s nice to have a change, and a change is exactly what we had this past weekend. We were actually social this weekend and had some company around!

Paul’s friend Howard came down to London to visit us with his lovely wife. Howard was Paul’s best man at our wedding, and we finally met Howard’s wife, Alina, last year. We haven’t seen them in between at all, so it was extremely nice to see the two of them again. They had some things they needed to get done in London, so we invited them to stay with us.

By the riverSeeing as they aren’t from London, Paul and I did our tourist bit. We took them round a few sights. It was a particularly nice day in London on Saturday, so we started the day at Borough Market and then wound our way along the Thames up to the Tattershall Castle, where we had a drink and a bit of rest. Then trekked on out again and made a stop at Fortnum & Mason by way of Buckingham Palace. It’s a pretty long walk, so we stopped off at the O’Neil’s in Soho, where the boys had a drink and us girls had a nice sit down for a bit.

margaritasWe ended the night at the Texas Embassy for dinner, but more importantly, for margaritas. The margaritas, for the record, were pretty yum. After a big full meal of TexMex, we headed home, where Paul introduced Howard to tennis on the Wii. I think he’s been waiting to have someone new to play with.

Started Sunday off with a big cooked breakfast, and I had a nice excuse to make pancakes. I haven’t had them in a while, and I was getting hungry for them. We saw them off in the afternoon and Paul and I have quickly settled back in to our doing “not much of anything.”

It was a good weekend. Definitely a nice break from the norm.

Another one bites the dust

Okay, I really just mean that another friend has come and gone from Great Britain. Paul and I have seen a few, and Kevin is just the most recent casualty.

It’s quite a phenomenon here. People come for a while, and then leave. Just like I thought I would. Hahaha… I’ll try not to laugh too loudly at the thought that I once told my mother that I would be here for three years, tops. I think with her visit over here she’s finally forgiven me for lying through my teeth. I still have trouble believing that I’m well over halfway in to my fifth year in the country!!

Leaving…

…on a jet plane…

Nope, not us this time! It’s my friend Kevin. He’s headed back to the states imminently, and last night was another (!!) of his leaving dos. It was a nice night out in Paddington, and we were able to buy Kevin one final pint. He’s not leaving us quite yet.

Currently he’s traveling around Europe, having one last fling with the continent before moving back to the good old USA. We get to see him one more time before he’s off for good. Hopefully we can give him one last hurrah worth remembering.

It’s gorgeous outside.

And I’m just relaxing now after having cooked dinner. I made steak sandwiches, and I’m waiting for my rhubarb crumble to come out of the oven. I got rhubarb in my fruit box this week, so I couldn’t let it go to waste. Especially as crumble is Paul’s number one favorite dessert. Or at least, one of many. I don’t really think he’s that discerning.

It’s been a beautiful weekend here. Paul and I spent the majority of today just relaxing – we also went for a drive. Yesterday, we spent the afternoon enjoying our garden. It was lovely. Hopefully the sun decides to stick around for a while. We could use a bit more of it.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Paul and I went to Rye last weekend. They were having their siege of Rye festival, which we just randomly happened upon. Here’s a picture of the jousting we saw. We got some video with the camera, but I haven’t had the time to really investigate how to get it on here. Plus I’m not sure anyone would really be interested!!

dsc01955We also saw them firing cannons at the festival, which was kinda cool. Paul enjoyed it a bit more than me, but we both agreed that Dad would have really liked it quite a bit.

Rye was a really pretty town, and the festival was an unexpected pleasure. We’re hoping that we can make it out to more places like that. With any luck we might have have another great experience!

What’s going on

Ok, so I’m going to call yesterday’s photo my feature photo of the week. Yes, I’m a little evil for putting pictures up of mom and dad snoozing away in the back of the car. The surprising thing is that I have even MORE pictures of mom and dad napping. You would think that’s all they did on their holiday, but I promise you, that’s not the case. They did tons and tons of things. That’s why they were so knackered. We wore them out. As simple as that.

So, now that I’ve given my apology for putting up silly pictures of mom and dad, I may as well let you all know what Paul and I have been up to.

Last weekend, we went to Rye. They were having the Siege of Rye Festival, which was pretty cool. They had jousting and all sorts. It was very similar to the medieval festivals I’ve been to back home, only different. The characters here seemed more eccentric than anything else. Rye seemed to be a nice, picture post card kind of town. Cobbled streets and pretty cottages – Paul and I both thought we could live there quite nicely.

Also this week, Paul and I booked another short holiday to France. We’re going over on the ferry again, and this time we’re staying in the Champagne-Ardenne region, near to the border with Belgium. We’re staying at another small hotel in the country. I think it will be gorgeous and lovely. I just need to begin brushing up on my French now.

And that’s our week so far. Hope you’re all having a good one as well.
